Mannose-binding lectin MBL ; , surfactant protein D SP-D ; and toll -like receptor 4 TLR4 ; are important components of the innate immune system. Polymorphisms in genes encoding for MBL, SP-D and TLR4 have been associated with infectious and inflammatory diseases. Thus, we speculated whether the presence of MBL, SP-D or TLR4 polymorphisms could be related to tubal infertility and risk of seropositivy for Ct. Material & Methods: 107 women with tubal infertility referred to IVF treatment and 113 women with no history of tubal disease referred to ICSI or IVF with donor semen due to male factor infertility were prospectively included. MBL, SP-D and TLR4 polymorphisms were investigated PCR techniques. Seropositivity for Ct was evaluated by ELISA and western blot techniques. Results: A significant association between Ct seropositivity and tubal infertility compared with ICSI controls odds ratio 5.72, P 0.0001 ; was observed. The likelihood to achieve a living pregnancy at week 7 was the same between Ct seropositive and Ct seronegative women. No significant difference in MBL, SP-D or TLR4 genotypes between the women with and without tubal disease was observed even when the Ct seropositivity status was taken into consideration. The investigated genotypes did not influence the likelihood to achieve a living pregnancy at week 7 in either group. Conclusions: Polymorphisms in the investigated genes were not associated with tubal infertility or decreased IVF outcome nor were they associated with Ct seropositivity. Thus, polymorhisms in these innate immunity genes do not seem to play a direct role in the pathophysiology of tubal obliteration. In our study, Ct seropositivity was not associated with the likelihood to achieve a living pregnancy.

Northern blot analysis of total rat liver RNA hybridized with `"P-labeled 5cu-reductase oligonucleotide probe ON-48 see under "Materials and Methods" ; revealed a hybridization signal at -2.4 kilobases Fig. 3A ; , which corresponds to the reported size of the 5n-reductase mRNA Andersson et al., 1989 ; . Of the stages of democratisation distinguished. The experience of post-Communist countries shows that formal procedural democratic criteria are insufficient in order to characterise a political system as democratic. For example, a self-proclaimed democracy may hold regular competitive elections open to all political forces but ignore or manipulate popular expectations. This illusion of a democracy may be created using very subtle methods, mostly by utilising the "administrative resources" of the ruling party raising salaries, subsidising loss-making public enterprises, usurping the attention of the media, etc. ; . Another example the formal "rules of the game" in post-Communist countries are often accompanied by the unwritten informal ; ones personal relations between politicians and businessmen, employees' fear of resisting dubious instructions from managers, various corruption schemes, etc. ; .8 These unwritten rules are sometimes even more influential than the laws officially in place. Therefore, in examining political regime changes in postCommunist countries, the democratic achievements should not be evaluated only on the basis of the formal, procedural criteria. It cannot be excluded that a political system may get "stuck" in the transitional stage neither democratic, nor authoritarian ; after holding the initial democratic elections and adopting a new constitution. In other words, the collapse of an authoritarian regime and the appearance of democratic procedures do not necessarily indicate a positive process. Instead of a liberal democracy, a "controlled" or some other version of "democracy" may be entrenched and this may not be a transitory phenomenon. In order to explain the conditions of democratic consolidation, an assumption should probably be made that the behaviour of political elite factions competing in the political system is always rational and self-interested, i.e. that they are seeking to maximise their influence on political decisions in every way possible.
